Just ask your neighbors what your dog's worst problem is. Chances are, they won't know or care about the fact that it likes to go through the trash or that is relieves itself on that special carpet all of the time. They will, however, talk about how noisy your dog is, particularly if you have a chronic barker. You know the kind, and perhaps you have one yourself - they are always barking at everything that moves, and some things that don't move. Even if you are simply trying to reduce the amount that your dog barks, follow some quick guidance, and you'll be happy with the way your dog doesn't bark.
Before we get into the specifics, it helps to know exactly why a dog is barking. It is their instinctive way of attracting attention to themselves or some other situation they're involved in. Whether it is something they're playfully interested in, or if they are trying to ward off danger, they're simply trying to alert everyone (and everything) around them of the situation.
The key, then, is to give them the attention that they want. Unfortunately, that will only reinforce the situation. Dogs crave attention almost as much as they crave food. So, when they get that attention, they see it as positive reinforcement. This will only encourage them to bark more, which they think will garnish more attention.
So your job is to acknowledge the situation without actually giving them a lot of attention. It can be Simple "Yes, I see the squirrels. But at least you should recognize, without praise or barking, giving more attention than they have to stop barking.
